Don’t touch the drum cylinder or expose it to sunlight. The drum is very sensitive to light & touch, and is very easy to damage.
The Brother printer counts drum rotations and shuts the drum unit down when it reaches it’s page yield at 5% coverage.
If your drum was working correctly prior to the “DRUM STOP” message appearing, you can reset the drum unit on your printer and continue printing. We do this by telling the printer we have installed a new drum unit. Or if you just installed a new drum and are still receiving an error message, you can follow these same instructions.
1. With the printer switched ON – Remove drum unit and toner cartridge from the printer (they are joined together)
2. Replace drum unit and toner cartridge back into the printer
3. Open the front cover of the printer
4. Press and hold down Go button for about 4 seconds until all LEDs light up
5. Once all 4 LEDs are lit, release Go button
6. Close front cover
Your drum unit has been reset!
LED Reset:
The following error messages will continue to appear if the drum counter was not reset when you replace the drum unit with a new one.
• Replace Drum
• Drum End Soon
• Drum Near End
• Drum Stop
To clear these error messages, you need to reset the drum counter:
NOTE: Illustrations shown below are from a representative product and may differ from your Brother machine.
Please reset the drum counter only when you replace the drum unit. If you reset the drum counter during the life of the drum unit currently being used, the remaining drum life will not be displayed accurately.
1. Make sure that the machine is turned on.
2. Open the front cover.
3. Press Clear or Clear/Back on the control panel.
NOTE: The layout of a control panel differs depending on the model, but the Clear or Clear/Back button is located on the right side of the LCD screen.
4. Do one of the following.
If your Brother machine has a numeric keypad:
Press 1 to reset the drum counter.
If your Brother machine doesn’t have a numeric keypad:
Press the Up Arrow Key to reset the drum counter.
5. When the LCD shows Accepted, close the front cover.
Resetting the drum unit will not improve print quality. It only resets your drum and allows you to continue to print. You decide when to replace the drum unit, not the manufacturer!
Can I improve print quality?
Small print defects can sometimes be cleared simply by cleaning the corona wire on the drum unit.
Remove the drum and cartridge from the printer. Separate the drum from the toner cartridge.
Clean the primary corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding the blue (or green on some drums) tab from right to left and left to right several times. Return the tab to the home position before you put the drum unit back in the printer. If you do not, printed page may have a vertical stripe.
Help my drum didn’t reset!
If the Drum LED is ON after you tried the reset, try cleaning the metal contacts with a dry lint-free soft cloth. You may need to also power off your printer and computer for 5 minutes to clear the memory if the reset does
not work the first time.
