In late 2014, we were informed that some refilled HP print-head cartridges were rejected by user’s printers. We have investigated and discovered that printers that use HP 61 cartridges offer a “Protected Mode”. When switched to “On” in the printer’s setting, this will permanently disable the cartridge for use in any other printer except the original printer which was “protected” it. The user can choose to turn this feature off if they understand what the feature is and locate the settings menu for the printer. We have not determined what the default setting is for any specific printer and/or driver.
